She graduated with a PhD from the University of Huddersfield after having worked as a clinical social worker in the hospital setting. Over the past six years, Dr. Mthembu has led collaborative international teaching and learning as well as research initiatives aimed at strengthening undergraduate and postgraduate social work education. She is a Principal investigator in an NIH-funded research project focusing on trauma among the participants enrolled in HIV cure research and a Norway-funded project which focuses on decolonising children’s rights. In 2024, she was awarded the Vice Chancellor ‘s UKZN Best Teacher’s Award and Dean’s Award in Excellence in Internationalisation. In 2021, she was selected as a runner-up for the ASASWEI Best Researcher Award. Dr Mthembu’s interests include child protection, developing child counselling storybooks, mental health and HIV. In 2020, she published a children’s storybook titled ‘My Journey During COVID-19’ that was translated into seven South African languages and distributed to over 10,000 children as part of a child mental health support intervention. To date, three children’s storybooks have been published and are used extensively as part of children’s prevention and early intervention programmes.Thenjiwe Andiswa Mlotshwa is a PhD candidate at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and a junior lecturer in the Discipline of Social Work. Ms Mlotshwa graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work (Hon) in Social Work and an MA in Child Protection and Law from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Ms Mlotshwa‘s research interests include child protection, children's rights, mental health and HIV.Nosipho Funeka is a Master’s candidate and Research Assistant in the Discipline of Social Work department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She also serves as a Teaching Assistant at the Durban University of Technology, Centre for General Education. Her research interests include mental health, HIV/AIDS, gender and sexuality studies, service-learning, social work education, and practice. She obtained her Bachelor's of Social Work degree (Hon) in from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.Dr. Karine Dubé is an Associate Professor in the University of California School of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health. She is a senior socio-behavioral scientist and experienced research programme manager who integrates biomedical research, socio-behavioral sciences, ethics and patient engagement around HIV-related research in the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa. She has over 20 years of experience in infectious disease-related work, including the socio-behavioral sciences and ethics of HIV cure-related research, HIV prevention, HIV treatment, Ebola, malaria, HSV-2 and more recently, Hepatitis B.Krista Dong, MD, is an infectious disease physician, with expertise in design and implementation of robust, patient centred HIV-cure and – prevention research protocols. Dong is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a core member of the Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT and Harvard. She began working in sub-Saharan Africa in 1995 and has been based in South Africa since 2000. She is a passionate advocate for conducting research and strengthening capacity in where interventions are needed the most.In 2012, she established the Females Rising through Education, Support and Health (FRESH) Acute HIV cohort in Durban South Africa, enrolling adolescent girls and young women at extraordinarily high-risk of HIV acquisition and performing frequent HIV-RNA monitoring to detect acute HIV-infection at the earliest timepoints to enable study of the first immunological responses and viral dynamics. Unique to the design of FRESH is that all study participants are co-enrolled in an empowerment and poverty-alleviation programme with classes that coincide with the frequent study visits. The FRESH site team works closely with investigators, participants and the community to ensure each step of the iterative research design process keeps participants at the core of the effort, to inform current and future protocols and interventions. Under Dong’s leadership, FRESH has expanded to become an active clinical trial site optimised for early-phase studies to test novel interventions for HIV prevention and cure.In February 2025, the FRESH site completed the first-in-Africa HIV-cure trial using a combination regimen of two broadly neutralising antibodies (CAP256 and VRC07) and a TLR-7 agonist (Vesatolimod), assessing safety and efficacy in a study that included an analytical treatment interruption.Jamila K. Stockman, PhD, MPH, is a Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health, Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. She is also Co-Director of the Sociobehavioral Science Core of the San Diego Center for AIDS Research. Dr. Stockman received her PhD in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and an MPH degree from the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health.Dr. Stockman, an epidemiologist by training, has dedicated her research career towards improving the lives of women impacted by HIV and experiences of intimate partner and sexual violence. Over the past 20 years, her research has focused on understanding racial and ethnic disparities and improving health equity in HIV prevention and treatment, sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, mental health (e.g. depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, resilience), and substance misuse, in the context of socio-structural factors (e.g. community violence, discrimination, medical mistrust) among marginalised populations. Dr. Stockman conducts community-engaged and trauma-informed biobehavioral observational (quantitative and qualitative), intervention, and evaluation research, resulting in over 100 peer-reviewed publications. She works with interdisciplinary research teams that include expertise in public health, medicine, nursing, social work, and psychology and collaborate with sexual and reproductive health clinics, community-based agencies and health departments to carry out her research. She also serves on various domestic-violence prevention steering committees and community-based organisations working to address the deleterious effects of violence and HIV in families and relationships.

Awarded three honorary doctoral degrees from Chile, Norway and Sweden, she is a globally recognized social work (SW) academic and human rights scholar who held leadership positions at national, regional and global levels. She chaired major, multiyear IASSW initiatives on Global Standards for SW Education & Training, Global SW Definition, and the Global SW Statement of Ethical Principles. She held a professorship position at Zayed University, UAE, and a Professor II position at University of Stavanger, Norway.
