His research combines phenomenology, film-philosophy, and ecocinema theory, with current projects incorporating insights from environmental humanities and decolonial film theory. For Film-Philosophy, he has co-edited a dossier on Heideggerian film-philosophy; other work appeared in Quarterly Review of Film and Video, New Review of Film and Television Studies, and Projections.

In addition to attaining a PhD in philosophy from Vanderbilt University in the United States, he has studied and taught in Germany and lived for more than a dozen years in Japan, where he studied Buddhist philosophy at Otani University and Japanese philosophy at Kyoto University, taught at various universities, and practiced Rinzai Zen at Shōkokuji monastery. He has published widely on Zen Buddhism and the Kyoto School as well as on various topics and figures in Continental and cross-cultural philosophy. His recent books include The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 2020) and Zen Pathways: An Introduction to the Philosophy and Practice of Zen Buddhism (Oxford University Press, 2022).
